How Google decides who appears on the map
Google says that results for searches with a place in mind depend mainly on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher or the place they named) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links and information across the web).
You cannot change your distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence. No one can guarantee a position, so treat everything below as steady groundwork.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
- Search for your business name on Google. If a profile already exists, claim it. Otherwise create one at business.google.com.
- Choose the most accurate primary category (for example "Software company" or "Hotel"). Add a few secondary categories that truly apply.
- Enter your exact business name as it appears on your signboard. Do not add keywords or locations to the name; Google can suspend profiles for this.
- Add your full address, phone number, website and opening hours, including holiday hours.
- Complete verification. Without it, your profile will not perform.
- Write a clear description of what you do, who you serve and where, in plain language.
- Add your services or products with short descriptions.
Step 2: Add photos, updates and answers
- Upload real photos: the building and signboard, the inside, your team and your work. Add new photos regularly.
- Use Google's updates or posts feature for offers, events and news.
- Check the questions and answers section and reply to anything customers ask.
- Turn on messaging or calls only if you can respond quickly.
Step 3: Earn reviews the right way
Reviews are a major trust signal for both Google and customers. Ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest, for an honest review. Share your review link by WhatsApp, SMS or a QR code at the counter.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
- For a negative review, acknowledge the problem, say what you will do, and take the detail offline.
- Never buy reviews, offer rewards in exchange for them or review your own business. Google removes such reviews and can penalise the profile.
Step 4: Keep your business details consistent everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should be written the same way on your website, Google profile, social media and business directories. Differences confuse search engines. List the business in well-known directories relevant to your sector and area, and correct old or duplicate entries.
Step 5: Support your profile with a website that ranks
Your profile and your website work together. Google reads your website to understand what you do and where.
- Give each main service its own page with useful, original content.
- Use a clear page title and heading that says what you do and where, such as "IT Company in Cuddalore".
- Show your address, phone number, hours and a map, and link your Google profile.
- Make the site fast and easy on mobile, since most searches happen on phones.
- Add structured data (schema) that matches your visible content.
- Link the pages together and write helpful guides that answer customer questions.
Step 6: Measure what matters
Google Business Profile shows how many people found you, called you, asked for directions or visited your website. Check it monthly and note which searches bring customers. Use Google Search Console for your website to see which queries lead to visits. Judge your work by enquiries, calls and sales, not by rankings alone.
Mistakes that hurt your visibility
- Stuffing keywords into the business name.
- Using a fake or shared address.
- Leaving the profile unverified or outdated.
- Ignoring reviews, or arguing with reviewers.
- Creating duplicate profiles for the same business.
- Expecting overnight results. Visibility builds over weeks and months.
